Tailgating occurs when an authorized individual permits others to follow behind without showing or registering proper authorization and gain access to a secure area. Tailgating is a function of both the attitude of the individual and the corporate culture towards adherence to security measures. The impacts and costs of tailgating affect both the business and personnel including; theft of equipment and intellectual property; workplace violence; loss of business because of perception of lax security; lax compliance with other security measures; safety; and, increased costs due to lack of knowledge of true real estate utilization. This paper discusses issues and best practices in tailgating deterrence and prevention (hardware and social engineering) for a range of situations, and identify key issues that impact the efficacy of these prevention measures.
